The cameras were installed in Windsor Mall – a key business district - providing police the option to monitor live or recorded images and video between Baker Street and Fitzgerald Street.
The primary aim of the CCTV Project is to help prevent crime and to help business owners and the community feel safe in Windsor Mall.
“Hawkesbury City Council is proud to help the NSW Police Force prevent crime at a local level and assist in the promotion of community safety,” said the Mayor.
Current research suggests that CCTV can be an effective strategy in situational crime prevention at a local level, when it is used as part of an integrated crime prevention strategy.
The cameras operate 24 hours a day seven days a week when movement is detected. There has already been a number of incidents were vision obtained via CCTV has been able to assist Police in their investigations.
Guests at the launch of the CCTV Project witnessed firsthand the newly installed CCTV in action at Windsor Police Station.
The cameras can provide clear and accurate details and images that will be of assistance to police in the protection of the Hawkesbury community.
The CCTV Project was jointly funded with $100,000 being provided through the Safer Suburbs Program through the Attorney-General’s Department and a $25,500 contribution by Council.
The Safer Suburbs Program aims to reduce crime by providing funding for community safety measures and include security-related infrastructure such as closed-circuit television systems (CCTV) and street lighting.
Any person witnessing a crime involving a life threatening or time critical emergency should call triple zero (000). All other crimes can be reported to the Police Assistance Line on 131 444.
