ECONOMIC BONANZA FROM WORLD CUP

Data reveals fan spending trends
AUSTRALIA'S appetite for the world's biggest soccer tournament is delivering a significant economic boost.

New data from Block shows fans are spending more at pubs, restaurants and on team merchandise throughout the competition.

Analysis of millions of transactions through Square and Afterpay between 11 and 27 June found bars and pubs experienced a 5.6 per cent rise in transactions and a 3.3 per cent increase in revenue during the tournament.

Match scheduling created two peak trading periods, with late-night venue trade jumping 24.1 per cent during evening fixtures and early-morning trade rising 16.2 per cent as venues opened from 5am for North American kick-offs.

Consumer enthusiasm also fuelled a surge in merchandise sales, with Afterpay reporting a 763.1 per cent year-on-year increase in national team jersey purchases, while broader football merchandise sales climbed 152.1 per cent.

Brisbane recorded the strongest growth in venue transactions, up 15.8 per cent, ahead of Sydney (6.5 per cent), Perth (3.7 per cent) and Adelaide (3.4 per cent). Northbridge in Perth, Cairns City and Melbourne's Brunswick were among the strongest-performing suburbs.

Food delivery orders increased by 1.9 per cent, while repeat visits to venues also rose, indicating fans were returning to watch multiple matches. Beer sales climbed 7.4 per cent, wine purchases increased 9.3 per cent and spirits were up 6.7 per cent.

Square Australia Executive Director Marco Lamantia said the tournament was creating measurable economic benefits beyond host nations, with Australian businesses adapting trading hours and services to meet changing consumer demand.

The findings are based on millions of Square and Afterpay transactions across Australia during the tournament period.
