The revitalised area will be renamed Centenary Square, restoring the original name of this historic space. Clearing works officially started this week.
“Centenary Square is the heart of Parramatta and the time for talk is over. This project is about building a safer, forward-looking and vibrant City,” Cr Chedid said.
“The works include brighter feature lighting, modern paving and street furniture, stylish new café and kiosk structures, and a new illuminated fountain.”
“Centenary Square will be a place where people can stop, linger and enjoy this great city.
“Importantly, this redevelopment will completely transform the main thoroughfare to Parramatta which has not been significantly upgraded since the 1980s.”
Parramatta City Council is investing $2 million this financial year to upgrade Centenary Square. Construction will finish after the Winterlight Festival in 2014.
The Centenary Square upgrade will deliver:
• More entertainment, events, performances and music
• More alfresco dining areas
• More seating and shade to relax
• Water play for children of all ages
• Special coloured lighting at night
