The Rudd Labor Government will contribute $9.5 million towards the development of the multi-purpose centre, with Tennis Australia and Blacktown City Council providing the remaining fundind.
Deputy Prime Minister Anthony Albanese joined Labor Member for Greenway Michelle Rowland to announce the Federal Government’s plan to build the new facility which will host regional and national tennis events.
“The Rudd Labor Government believes that local communities should have the best possible sporting facilities,” Mr Albanese said.
“The Centre will comprise 32 courts including a show court with seating for around 1,000 people and a clubhouse. The Centre is expected to cater for some 85,000 visitors every year and will be used to host major events such as Tennis NSW junior tournaments, helping boost the local economy.”
Construction of this Centre is expected to generate around 55 direct and indirect jobs during the construction phase as well as six permanent jobs when in operation.
“Of course, the value of the centre goes beyond its impact on the local economy,” Ms Rowland said.
“Sporting and recreation infrastructure make a massive contribution to encouraging participation in sport which has a number of benefits for the health of our local community.” Construction of the centre will start early next year. Funding for this project is included in the Budget.
