Master plan to establish elite heart of sport

BLACKTOWN International Sportspark Sydney at Rooty Hill plans to establish itself as the heart of sport in Western Sydney with a draft master plan that develops the park as an elite sports resource for Greater Western Sydney.

Since its inception as a playing and training venue for the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games, Blacktown International Sportspark Sydney (formerly Blacktown Olympic Park) has grown into a sports hub for elite and community sport.

With professional teams from baseball (Sydney Blue Sox), football (Western Sydney Wanderers FC), Cricket (Lend Lease Breakers, NSW Speed Blitz Blues & Sydney Thunder) and AFL (GWS Giants Academy) together with Softball, Athletics and the International Goalkeepers Academy the Sportspark attracts more than half a million visitors per year.

The Blacktown City Council draft master plan for the park creates a long-term vision for the Sportspark and identifies key infrastructure and facility development that will provide elite clubs and grass roots sport with state of the art playing and training venues.

The master plan will also create a valuable community destination for leisure, recreation, sport and wellbeing. The draft master plan identifies four key delivery stages of the 20 year vision; 1  - 3 years, 3 – 5 years, 5 – 10 years and 10 years plus.

Included in the plan are a new high performance and community sports complex with gym, sports hall, aquatics, sports medicine and science, community meeting and education rooms; low cost accommodation for academy students, food and beverage; commercial hotel and retail, improved softball and baseball stadia and complete rectangular and oval stadiums.

“The addition of high performance facilities, sports medicine, recovery and accommodation will be an attractive option for training major sport teams, as will the development and/or extension of stadium infrastructure,” said Blacktown City Mayor, Councillor Len Robinson.

“Whether in the near future or further down the line, we believe our region deserves a world class sporting facility. To that end Council is presently exploring opportunities to make this happen.”

The public exhibition of the Blacktown International Sportspark draft master plan is now closed. It is expected Council will consider formal endorsement of the master plan later this year.
