How I plan to transform feminine hygiene globally

By Phaemie Ng

JUST last month, I pitched my start up Two Rags Clothing at the Deloitte Social Innovation Event and was fortunate enough to win.

Two Rags Clothing is a tiny company with a huge heart and a serious mission. We create fashionable underwear and every sale enables us to give a reusable sanitary kit to a girl or woman in need.

At the heart of our company is a simple goal, to improve feminine hygiene in the developing world and we’ve chosen to start with India.

Every woman goes through “that time of the month”. But while some of us are lucky enough to know we can rely on clean sanitary products, not every girl or woman has this luxury.

In India, more than 300 million women lack access to clean sanitary products either because they are too expensive or simply unavailable.

Instead of using hygienic sanitary pads or tampons, women have to make do with old rags, old saris and sometimes even shocking materials like sand and bark!

Put yourself in their shoes for a moment and consider the health and social issues that using unhygienic products can cause, and you’ll soon begin to see why girls and women often miss school and work during their periods.

Two Rags was born out of this frustration and a desire to enable girls and women to reach for higher goals, to no longer be held back by a simple biological process.

Armed with a humble sketchbook and sewing machine, I got to work on my prototypes and have received superb feedback on our women’s hipster briefs, which will soon go into production in time for a full launch early next year.

For us, the sky’s the limit. The beauty of our model is that as we grow as a fashion brand, we will be able to help more women in need. It’s India for now, but in time we want Two Rags to expand to help girls and women anywhere and everywhere lead lives with dignity.

As a new company, Two Rags has received tremendous support from people wanting to help, whether it’s wanting to purchase our products as soon as they hit the shelves or simply spreading the word.

We are a small team hard at work and are encouraged by the positive feedback from friends and strangers alike. We encourage everyone to learn more about our mission and engage with us. Together we can make feminine hygiene a reality for all.

Two Rags is looking for retail stockists interested in carrying our product and India-based not for profits to partner with to distribute our kits. Interested parties can contact info@tworagsclothing.com.
