Parramatta Lord Mayor, Cr John Chedid said the investment in one of Western Sydney’s iconic sports grounds is vital to the future growth of sport in the region.
“Council’s investment, along with the State and Federal Government’s funding commitments, will ensure that the Eels and Wanderers play their home games in Parramatta,” Cr Chedid said.
“This is critical to retaining the economic benefits these teams bring to our City and to retain our status as the sporting capital of Western Sydney.
“Sport is a significant contributor to our local economy. During the Wanderers inaugural season, their fans spent a whopping $17.3 million in Parramatta, at restaurants, cafes and hotels, helping to create 81 full-time jobs. The Eels also injected almost $10 million into the local economy and created 45 full-time jobs.
“Upgrades to Parramatta Stadium will not only provide a better experience for spectators but also ensure that our two local sporting teams, the Parramatta Eels and the Western Sydney Wanderers, have the necessary facilities to enhance their growth, both on and off the pitch,” Cr Chedid said.
The Federal Government has committed $20 million, with the NSW Government pitching in $6 million towards the upgrade of Parramatta Stadium.
