BLACKTOWN HOSPITAL EXPANSION

$324 upgrade to meet growing demand

THE State Government’s commitment to expanding Blacktown and Mount Druitt Hospitals is well underway.

The Stage 1 project has a capital budget of $324 million, with $296 million of this from the NSW Government and $28 million from the Federal Government for a new Mental Health Unit at Blacktown Mount Druitt Hospital.

With the area’s rapidly growing and diversifying community, the demand for health services is increasing and the current hospitals need to expand to meet these demands.

The expansion of Blacktown and Mt Druitt Hospitals will provide contemporary, first-class health care to the local population as part of a network of health facilities in the region.

Blacktown City Council has created opportunities for further allied health services to be developed on land adjoining Blacktown Hospital. The expansion of Blacktown Hospital will be a catalyst for this growth to occur.

As more allied health services are drawn to the area as a centre of excellence in health care the more Blacktown Health Precinct will grow, creating more jobs for the City.

The expansion of Blacktown Mount Druitt Hospital is pleasing evidence that the state and federal governments have recognised the importance of Blacktown as a hub for Western Sydney.

“Stage 2 of the project is still in its planning stage. However, with the speed at which the Blacktown area is growing it is essential this occurs as soon as possible. Whilst the plans for Stage 2 are yet to be made public, Council encourages the possibility of the inclusion of a private hospital, which would work to complement the existing services,” a Council spokesperson said.

The expansion will involve works at both the Blacktown Mt Druitt campuses of the Hospital that include:

Mt Druitt Campus

•    A new entry and additional emergency department capacity.
•    Eight additional dental chairs.
•    Additional subacute rehabilitation services.
•    Expansion of support services including the Central Sterilising Services Department.
•    An additional 10 inpatient beds across the site.

•    An additional 170 inpatient beds including additional intensive care and high dependency beds.
•    Additional outpatient clinics and treatment spaces.
•    An in-centre renal dialysis unit.
•    Additional cardiac catheterisation capability.
