PUBLIC HAVE SAY ON POWERHOUSE

THE public will have their say on the future of the Powerhouse Museum after the state government announced public consultation would soon start.

Arts Minister Don Harwin said a final business case which would be released later this year would expand on options for the new Parramatta museum, adding some Powerhouse presence would remain at the current site in Ultimo.

Sydney Business Chamber’s Western Sydney director David Borger said he was disappointed the state government would not honour a previous commitment to move the entire Powerhouse Museum collection to Parramatta.

“Parramatta deserves an iconic, cultural building that Western Sydney residents can enjoy,” Mr Borger said.

However, he said he was “relieved to hear the mothership of the Museum of Applied Arts and Sciences will be located in Parramatta”, saying it would significantly boost the area’s culture.

“The Chamber welcomes the opportunity for consultation around the Parramatta Powerhouse and we are eager to explore options for the new museum,” Mr Borger said.
