FEDERAL ELECTION 2016

Western Sydney falls to Labor

LABOR cut a swathe through Western Sydney in Saturday’s Federal election, increasing its majority in its seats and winning back some of its heartland.

With most of the votes counted, it looks like Liberal golden girl Fiona Scott is set to lose her seat of Lindsay to Labor with a 4.5 per cent swing their way.

That is despite Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull spending more time in that electorate than in any other Western Sydney seat during the campaign.

His last minute visit to Parramatta to support Liberal candidate Michael Beckwith did not swing voters, with Labor’s Julie

Owens taking the party’s most marginal seat with a six per cent swing, giving her a more comfortable 7.3 per cent margin.

In Werriwa, high profile Liberal mayor Ned Mannoun failed to grab the seat from Labor.

But the biggest coup for Labor was grabbing Macarthur from the Liberals with a 12.6 per cent swing. Mike Freelander is the new MP of what had not been a Labor seat since 1993.

The Liberal’s best win in an election that saw even a swing to Labor in blue-ribbon seats further north was in Reid where Craig Laundy enjoyed a 1.3 per cent swing.
