Management students take on world

A GROUP of enterprising management students from the University of Western Sydney will represent Australia at the Global University Final, in Amsterdam, after winning the title of Australian University Champion in Supply Chain Management.

Chris Fifita, Markie Lugton, Kate Smith and Ali Leghaei competed in The Fresh Connection National Competition, over seven weeks, against 170 supply chain professional and students from Curtin University, Queensland University of Technology and the University of South Australia.

"No undergraduate student team has ever before been the overall leader in any of the competitions around the world," said Stephen Waters, lecturer, at the UWS School of Management, who mentored the students throughout the competition.

"Considering that the competition has been conducted in nine countries with more than 300 companies and over 35 universities competing, this is a commendable effort."

Mr Waters said the UWS students would be the first ever-international representatives from Australia for The Fresh Connection.

The team would compete against universities from the UK, US, Belgium, Netherlands, Germany, Denmark, France, and South Africa.

"Supply chain management is becoming increasingly important in contemporary Australia," he said.

"With the current skill shortage in this sector, particularly in the Greater Western Sydney region, graduates with supply chain management qualifications from UWS have a distinct advantage."

UWS is one of the few universities in Australia that offers the global operations and supply chain management key program through its bachelor of business and commerce course.

The UWS team has also qualified for the Signet National Final Open Competition against companies such as BlueScope Steel, Caltex Australia, Coca-Cola Amatil, Nestle Australia Limited and Dell Australia.
