PARRAMATTA WORKERS CLUB

Development Plan referred for decision

A PLANNING proposal to rezone the former Parramatta Workers Club to permit a range of land uses including a place of public worship has been referred to NSW Department of Planning and Environment, seeking a conditional Gateway determination.

The site, at 163-165 George Street, Parramatta, just outside the eastern fringe of the CBD, includes a large 1960s era club building, with bowling greens and at-grade parking.

It has recently been purchased by Hellenic Orthodox Community of Parramatta and Districts, which has held its church and related activities at 11 Hassall Street, Parramatta.

The proposed initial activity on the site is for religious services to be followed over time to include: educational, social, cultural, charitable and administrative functions.

The social and economic impacts arising from the proposal would contribute to the
revitalisation of a strategically located parcel of land and would widen the range of social and cultural activities on offer in the city of Parramatta, a report said.

Elsewhere, council has also referred a planning proposal to increase a building height from six to 24 storeys on a corner site, at 5-7 Parkes Street, Parramatta.

The 2016-square-metre site, formerly a restaurant, on the corner of Anderson Street, adjoins Jubilee Park the Holiday Inn hotel on the fringe of Auto Alley.
