LIGHT RAIL ROUTES

Hills pushing for Carlingford

HILLS Mayor Dr Michelle Byrne has called on NSW Premier Mike Baird to consider light rail routes that she believes will best serve Sydney’s North West.

Mayor Byrne released three concept routes that connect Parramatta to Castle Hill via Old Northern Road and Parramatta to Macquarie Park via Carlingford.

“We’ve included two options for Parramatta to Macquarie Park via Carlingford. One option goes via Pennant Hills Road and Carlingford Road. The other option goes via the land corridor that has been reserved for heavy rail,” Mayor Byrne said.

She said the routes were not set in stone and were simply a guide for the NSW Government to investigate further.

“These are concept routes but I think they are a good indication of where light rail could best service the North West.”

Mayor Byrne said any future light rail network must include Carlingford.

“We can’t ignore Carlingford any longer. For years it has been the subject of many broken promises like the Epping to Parramatta heavy rail link,” Mayor Byrne said.

“A light rail line that doesn’t include Carlingford isn’t worth building.”

“There’s more than 21,000 residents living in Carlingford at the moment and they’re serviced by one train an hour to Clyde and infrequent buses. The population of Carlingford will rise by 46% by 2031 - therefore action needs to be taken now.”

“I want to thank the NSW Premier and Transport Minister Gladys Berejiklian for committing to investigate and build a Western Sydney Light Rail network. I hope the areas that need public transport the most will be serviced.”
