Ultra-modern health campus planned
RED DWYER
A $330M investment in Camden will act as a catalyst for further investment in South West Sydney, one of the fastest growing regions in Sydney.
The recently approved concept plans for the Camden Medical Campus proposes a three-staged 473-bed, six-storey, ultra-modern private hospital to be developed in three stages through to 2040.

The first stage is expected to open in 2020. The facility would form the centrepiece of a new one-stop shop health campus expected to contain cluster of specialist consultancy rooms, allied health and a dedicated centre for paediatric healthcare.

Demand for health services in South West Sydney exceeds supply; this demand is set to expand even further with the addition of 300,000 people to the Macarthur region in the next decade.

The aim of the integrated facility is to utilise private sector healthcare investment to promote independence of the community from reliance on public sector services, relieving the burden on public hospitals in the area.

In particular, the Liverpool and Campbelltown hospitals, according to the environmental impact statement (EIS).

The integration of education, teaching and research facilities within the hospital would provide an opportunity for the campus to become known as a “knowledge hub” making it attractive to doctors and other clinicians, as well as professionals in medical-related industries.

The educational facilities within the hospital would focus on creating an innovative and vibrant learning community, with lecture theatres and tutorial rooms throughout the facility creating opportunities for teaching and collaborative work.

The facility would be a significant generator of employment, with an estimated employment generation of approximately 800 direct jobs upon completion, according to the EIS.

The proposal would also result in approximately 400 jobs during construction and 2400 indirect jobs would be generated throughout the operations of the development.

The facility will be situated on a 4.2-hectare site in the Gregory Hills Corporate Park (GHCP), on The Heritage Way, in Gledswood Hills, six kilometres north of Camden.

“Our vision is for an ultra-modern hospital campus offering world-class health care to the people of the Camden region and the South West,” said Satwant Calais, director, Gregory Hills Corporate Park, the applicant for project.

“This is a $330M investment in the Camden region – a powerful signal of confidence in its economic growth,” said Mr Calais. It will spur other businesses to invest, creating more jobs and economic activity.”

The GHCP is a 30-hectare business and large box retail or bulky goods retail park, located at the centre of the South West Growth Corridor.
