KEY REGIONAL TOURIST VENUE

Windfall expected from new zoo

By Red Dwyer

HIGH hopes of an economic windfall are riding on the approval of a zoo in Blacktown.

“If approved, the zoo would become a catalyst for change in the area,” according to a development application for a $28 million investment in the proposed 16.5-hectare Sydney Zoo, which is on public exhibition until February 1.

“It would encourage further revitalisation of the area, facilitate economic growth in Blacktown and its surroundings, increase employment opportunities and highlight Western Sydney as a key tourist destination.”

The vision for Sydney Zoo is to create an iconic tourist attraction which complements the overall masterplan for the Bungarribee Precinct of the Western Sydney Parklands, according to the application.

The zoo would be an important part of the cultural infrastructure for the region and wider Sydney area through the establishment of a key destination and tourist facility in the growing Western Sydney region.

It is estimated that between 500,000 to 800,000 visitors per annum would visit the proposed Zoo, which is intended to be a 2.5 to 3 hour visitor experience.

The zoo expects to employ approximately 50 full-time staff, and 50-60 casual staff to accommodate peak visitation periods, such as school holiday periods.

The proposed amenity falls within the Western Sydney Parklands, and is in close proximity to the Great Western Highway, M4 Western Motorway and Westlink M7
